On Earth-17909, two spiders swing through the city, fighting crime and locking up supervillains...
Project Spyder is a SHIELD bio-altering experiment that aimed to replicate the abilities of Spider-Man in a SHIELD controlled operative. At the time of the project's conception, it was unclear whether the vigilante known as Spider-Man could be trusted. The success of the experiment would provide a solution should Spider-Man be deemed dangerous.
The project, headed by Agents Mehta and Tao, was successful upon the second attempt, providing TS-2 with the ability to stick to almost any surface, enhanced strength and speed, advanced healing abilities, and claws that secrete a powerful neurotoxin.
Real Name: Ahalya Mehta
Ahalya Mehta is one of the SHIELD agents in charge of Project Spyder. She was the scientist in charge of creating a serum that would replicate Spider-Man's powers in another subject. She was the first volunteer for the experiment, known as TS-1. The experiment mysteriously had no effect on Mehta. The failure of the experiment did not discourage Mehta, and she instead used technology to create the effect of powers. She now operates under the codename Chrysilla.
Mehta also created the robot WEBBI (Wireless, Encrypted, Binary Bot and Interface) to assist her and Agent Tao on missions.
Real Name: Jia Tao
Jia Tao is the second SHIELD agent in charge of Project Spyder. A skilled fighter and tactician, she was tasked with studying the powers and skills of Spider-Man in order to better replicate or counter the vigilante. She was one of the volunteers for the experiment, known as TS-2. After the success of the experiment and with new powers, Tao took on the codename Avicularia.
Tao often works with Agent Mehta on missions, and the pair make one of SHIELD's most efficient teams.
Let's start at the beginning, one more time...
The year is 2022. My best friend and I finished watching Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse (2018) for the millionth time, when I was struck with inspiration.
"Anyone can wear the mask"
It was this idea that inspired me and many others to think about what it would be like to be a part of the Spider-verse. Of course, my best friend would be right there with me. And so, I began to draw.
Combining our favourite superhero characteristics, aesthetics, and Marvel lore, the spidersonas of Earth-17909 came to life.
Agents Avicularia and Chrysilla are named after two species of spiders, chosen mostly to match the colour schemes of my designs. Avicularia Purpurea is a dark bluish-purple tarantula typically found in Ecuador. Chrysilla Volupe are a type of jumping spider with iridescent scales giving them a very colourful appearance.
